Any potion that remotely suggests the promise of everlasting youth is likely to have a certain breed of humans clamouring for a trial. From plush salons in Beverly Hills, the caviar facial has made its way into the Indian beauty market with the same promise.

From specialty restaurants to spas
Once the exclusive indulgence of wine connoisseurs and fine diners, these exotic fish eggs (that’s what caviar is) are now in hot demand among spa-goers for their newly discovered anti-ageing and skin rejuvenating properties. Caviar facials are no longer the domain of celebrities and the who’s who – even regular women are now willing to shell out big bucks for timeless beauty.

What makes it work?
Research shows that the cellular structure of caviar is very similar to that of the human skin. The eggs contain high levels of lipids, moisture and proteins that provide intense nourishment and promote regeneration of cells. As the skin is infused with nutrients and lost moisture, it regains its elasticity and tautness. Rosang, a spa consultant for Maya (Western) Spa at Zuri Hotels, says, “Caviar facials yield remarkable results on mature skin due to their skin-plumping and anti-ageing properties. People as young as 30 can get them done if their skin is prone to dryness or fine lines. However, we don’t recommend these facials for very young and sensitive skin.”

Since the pure stuff is prohibitively priced and not abundantly available, caviar facials are usually done using creams and serums containing caviar extracts. The upside is that you get to skip the fishy smell and the slimy, briny feel of fish roe on your face. A typical caviar facial session involves a cleansing routine and a massage with caviar and algae extracts topped by a caviar mask containing botanicals and minerals. “Just like any other anti-ageing treatment, one must get at least 2-3 sessions in order to see noticeable and long-lasting effects. If that is not possible, you may use commercially available skin products containing caviar extracts but the result is not half as good as a professionally done facial,” suggests Rosang. However, if you are out scouting for caviar products, we recommend the ones by Pevonia, Bellaskin and La Prairie.
